Mössbauer study of iron uptake in cucumber root

چکیده
Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to study the uptake and distribution of iron in the root of cucumber plants grown in iron-deficient modified Hoagland nutrient solution and put into iron-containing solution with 10 μM Fe citrate enriched with Fe (90%) only before harvesting. The Mössbauer spectra of the frozen roots exhibited two Fe components with typical average Mössbauer parameters of δ=0.5 mm s, Δ=0.46 mm s and δ=0.5 mm s, Δ=1.2 mm s at 78 K and the presence of an Fe doublet, assigned to the ferrous hexaaqua complex. This finding gives a direct evidence for the existence of Fe ions produced via root-associated reduction according to the mechanism proposed for iron uptake for dicotyledonous plants. Monotonous changes in the relative content of the components were found with the time period of iron supply. The Mössbauer results are interpreted in terms of iron uptake and transport through the cell wall and membranes.

Iron ranks fourth in the sequence of abundance of the elements in the Earth's crust, but its low bio-availability often limits plant growth. When present in suboptimal amounts, the acquisition of iron by plants is aided by a suite of responses, comprising molecular and developmental changes that facilitate the uptake of iron from sparingly soluble pools. The expression of genes involved in the ...
متن کاملAlkaline stress and iron deficiency regulate iron uptake and riboflavin synthesis gene expression differently in root and leaf tissue: implications for iron deficiency chlorosis
Iron (Fe) is an essential mineral that has low solubility in alkaline soils, where its deficiency results in chlorosis. Whether low Fe supply and alkaline pH stress are equivalent is unclear, as they have not been treated as separate variables in molecular physiological studies. Additionally, molecular responses to these stresses have not been studied in leaf and root tissues simultaneously. We...

متن کاملGibberellin Is Involved in Inhibition of Cucumber Growth and Nitrogen Uptake at Suboptimal Root-Zone Temperatures
Suboptimal temperature stress often causes heavy yield losses of vegetables by suppressing plant growth during winter and early spring. Gibberellin acid (GA) has been reported to be involved in plant growth and acquisition of mineral nutrients. However, no studies have evaluated the role of GA in the regulation of growth and nutrient acquisition by vegetables under conditions of suboptimal temp...
